Interfaith Network Celebrates Twentieth Anniversary in 2009

May 1st 2009

In August 2009, the Interfaith Network will celebrate its 20th anniversary.  The Network formalised its beginnnings at City Hall on 21 August, 1989 where leaders of faith communities signed a Common Statement making a personal commitment to the Mayor and Councillors  of the day to work together for the promotion of harmonious relations in  Springvale's multicultural, multi-faith community.

Today, the Interfaith Network still gathers annually in the now known City of Greater Dandenong to  honour that first and ongoing important committment to work for peace,  harmony and understanding.

This twentieth anniversary is an important milestone for the Network and for  the community as the Interfaith Network of the City of Greater Dandenong is the oldest network in Australia. It is considered a model for wider  Victorian communities some of who have begun similar networks and initiatives based on the work of the Interfaith Network of the City of Greater Dandenong.

To celebrate and mark this significant occasion, on Saturday August 8th  2009, the Interfaith Network will be hosting a National Interfaith  Grassroots Conference and Celebration to continue to raise awareness of the  importance of bringing peace, harmony and understanding within the local  community as well as raising awareness of the importance of these interfaith  principles on a wider scale. The Network will be delighted to welcome  friends of other interfaith and multifaith networks and initiatives from  around Victoria and Australia to share with them in this historic moment.
